TRULY AMAZING

Gavin’s book report assignment for March is to take a picture of something and write a report about it, student’s choice. We ventured out to the backyard in hopes of finding an interesting plant or bug to write about.

While Gavin was searching the yard for his new subject, commenting now and then on rollie-pollies and butterflies, I wandered over to pick a few avocados off of the tree for the guacamole I was planning to make for burritos later.

Something caught my eye. The tiniest little movement just above the avocado I was about to pick. I couldn’t believe it. Right there in front of me was the sweetest, tiniest little hummingbird perched on her nest, not budging an inch, not even entertaining the thought of abandoning her babies. It’s hard to get up close and personal with a hummingbird because their wings can move up to an amazing 200 times PER SECOND as we’ve come to find out. Their travel speed can also exceed 60 mph. WOW!

We love our little “Hummy” and will be sad when she and her babies leave the nest but maybe, just maybe one of her babies will return to make her family home in our tree next Spring.

Here she is.

Look at the detail of her nest and how she has secured it to the branch. Amazing.

Uh-Ohhhhhh, better distract this one with some kitty treats.
